The Utah County Battle Guard held its last meeting of the season in the rain on Tuesday night. Most of their meetings involve LARPing, or live-action role-playing, which is a popular hobby where people can dress up as another person in a few hours.

For the battle guards in Utah County, this means giving family members the opportunity to beat each other in the name of practicing melee skills.

"Our goal is to build a family-oriented group, so parents and children. You can't hear profanity here," said Jarom Rush, the Battleguard community leader. Rush also uses the title of Warlord in the game.

"Basically, it was just a group of people coming. He prepared a bunch of foam weapons, and then there were rules so that people wouldn't get hurt and things like that so you could kill people," said Field Guardian soldier Peter Nelson. He wielded a sword twice his height.

Weapons are man-made, but this does not necessarily mean that you will not be injured. 15-year-old Ivy Nelson participated in BattleGuard. Her weapon was made by her father using carbon fiber tubes, pipe insulation, hockey tape, and a pointed camping foam pad.

"I like that this is a way you can meet great people and do a lot of physical exercise, and tell your friends,'I fight with a spear' is really fun," Ivey Nelson said.

Many people dress for this occasion. "We make most of (clothes), so we get together, we have a craft club, we make weapons and shields, we make our clothes, or you can buy them, either way," Rush said.

For participants, this is a great way to vent their emotions and meet new friends, sometimes as many as 100 people attend.

Fans’ favorite game last night was "God of War". You can hit people at any time.

The battle guards will not meet again until March next year, so participants will quarrel with their families and prepare weapons in the winter.
